About Us
Curriculum
The Discoveries Curriculum is a literature-based approach to teaching early academics in a fun and developmentally appropriate manner. It is designed to help children express themselves through creativity, learn through play and become independent thinkers. The focus of the classroom activities is on the process of learning rather than the end product. The primary role of the educators is to facilitate learning by providing a stimulating, child-centered environment where children are encouraged to explore, imagine and engage in meaningful experiences. Multiculturalism is and integral part of the curriculum to develop children’s appreciation of diversity.
“I hear and I forget;
I see and I remember;
I do and I understand.”
-Chinese Proverb
Philosophy
We believe that children need to feel comfortable and understood before they can truly delve into learning. To best foster a welcoming environment, we work to build a classroom community by respecting our students as learners and celebrating their individualities.
Once children feel secure in their surroundings they can begin to develop friendships. During this time, young children need guidance in cooperation and sharing. Therefore, we strive to create an environment in which children learn how to be independent and respectful to themselves and each other. Through modeling positive social interaction and utilizing conflict resolution, the children begin to develop problem solving skills and a respect for their peers.
A community of learners is not complete without the involvement of families. We encourage families to become an integral part of their child’s learning experience. A strong relationship between home and school allows children to feel continuity throughout their day and gives them a chance to share with their families what they are learning. We continually work on developing positive partnerships and open communication with families.
